1. Aesthetics

The overall look of the device is one of simplistic beauty. This Android Phone manages to keep the original style cues of the droid in some ways while branching out into bold new territory in others. It keeps the black-on-black styling and adds in a few new twists on the old concept. The initial thing that most people will notice is the size of the screen. The plastic bezel of the original Droid is now an understated design concept that has all but disappeared. The 4.3-inch WVGA screen (854 X 480 pixels) almost seems to go from edge to edge. At the top of the device a thin speaker anchors a green light bearing panel. At the bottom there is a much smaller strip that accounts for the hard buttons of this phone. The menu, home, search, and back buttons are represented here. The whole concept of this phone is sleek and sexy communication.

2. The Processor

When people think of phone features they usually think of social apps, apps in general, or how cool the phone looks. The most important feature of any smart phone is actually the processor it is built with. A smart phone may look extraordinarily sexy, but if it can't perform what's the point? The Droid X runs on the latest iteration of Texas Instruments' OMAP processor. This bad boy clocks in at a blistering 1.0 GHz and manages 512 megabytes of ram in the process. This is an important feature because higher processing speed generally equates to a speedier and more dynamic usage of software and programs in general.

3. Battery Life

This smart phone comes with one of the most advanced battery systems in the smart phone market to date. It sports a removable 1570mAh battery. The closest competitor to this level of battery power is not Apple. It is HTC. The HTC Evo's much touted 1500mAh battery is just a touch underpowered compared to Droid X. The mobile device uses this battery in three different profile styles. It comes with performance mode, smart mode, and battery saver mode. Each mode uses a different level of battery power. The median level smart mode can be run most of the day off of one full charge if the phone is used in a normal manner. Even more interesting is that there is built-in programming so that the phone can explain to its user exactly what program or component is using which level of battery power consumption percentage.

4. Connectivity

The Droid X carries support for many items in the connectivity arena. It supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, accelerometer, and 3G mobile hotspot tethering. The mobile hotspot tethering can support up to five devices and generally costs an extra $20 per month. There are several other features as well in this area of interest. The fact that this is the first Android phone to support DLNA comes to mind as well. It also utilizes a GPS system and light sensor technology.

5. Display

This smart phone is a refreshing change from the cramped imagery of other models. With a 4.3-inch amoled screen capable of 720p HD video play back, the Droid X is practically a home entertainment center in the palm of your hand. This much visual real estate makes it incredibly easy to read website information and to perform dynamic functions. The screen seems to handle daylight very well and maintains a highly realistic coloration. The visuals are crisp, clean, and well contrasted for maximum visual acuity and performance.

6. Camera

The dual-LED flash on the Droid X is capable of taking some of the most brilliant photos seen on a smart phone to date. It manages to use its 8.0 megapixel camera to its fullest effect. The camera enjoys a nice field of depth, takes solid low-light photos, and comes with a wide variety of options that are not seen in many smartphones. The panoramic mode is a feature many find interesting about this camera. It allows for the creation of extra-wide images that are stitched together to give a greater visual effect. It has flash adjustment, effects, face detection, and other nifty items of interest.

7. Calls

It's a crazy thought, but sometimes people actually use their smart phone for live voice communication. While many phone manufacturers try to downplay this concept with all the bells and whistles they add to their mobile devices in the current era, that is not the case with the Droid X. This cell phone has the typical normal and speaker modes. When speaking in normal mode the callers sound clear and incredibly crisp to this smart phone's user.

8. DLNA

DLNA technology is a system that allows for the interoperability and connectivity of one device with another. In this instance the Droid X can be used in conjunction with another device, such as a Blu-ray dvd player or an appropriate DLNA capable television set, to allow for interaction between the two. For instance, the Droid X can download a movie or stream live television feeds directly from the phone to the device it is connected too. At present this is the only cell phone with this capability. Given the 720p capacity of the device this leads to hi-def transmission with flawless execution.

9. A Better Concept than Motoblur

The existence of Motoblur is not new on a Motorola device. However, Motorola has gone on record as saying they do not have this on the Droid X. In most of the earlier Motorola products this feature was a prerequisite that must be dealt with upon initial operation. However, in this mobile device the option to use a system similar to Motoblur exists but is not absolutely required. It allows for all the user friendly usage that made the software famous. Specialized media interfaces, various security measures, and centralized accounts are all part of the typical Motoblur package that survive in this device. Motorola decided to go with a tweaked standard Android User Interface instead.

10. Swype Input

While a virtual keyboard such as the iPhone's works very well, Motorola decided to go with something different. This difference is the addition of Swype technology to the Droid X. Swype allows the end-user to keep their finger on the display as they type. Instead all that an interested user needs to do is drag their finger to each letter. They can use this to write e-mails, input browser text, and make the typing process a great deal more efficient overall. This was an intelligent decision in the eyes of many techno-savvy individuals as it just might be the real kicker that proves the Droid X as the superior smart phone for 2010.

11. Removable Media Storage Capacity

One of the many issues with lesser mobile devices is the lack of supported removable storage solutions. This device sets a new standard. The Droid X allows for end-users to save up to 24GB of data on the device by using an on-board 8GB storage system combined with a 16Gb microSD one. This removes the need for a user to always tie down their harddrive or use a USB connection directly to the phone to transfer data. The use of a microSD card allows for simplicity in data transfer that marks the Droid X as the king of data transference in 2010.

12. User Friendly Widget Resizing

The existence of widgets with the capacity to be multiple sizes is nothing new or exciting. However, Motorola's newest mobile device has made changing the sizes of widgets almost too simple. If the user taps and holds on a given widget it will begin to vibrate shortly. Then if the user lifts their finger they will see arrows in each of the widget's corners. All that is necessary for resizing is to drag one of those corners. It may not be as awesome or awe-inspiring as an 8.0 megapixel camera or a 4.3-inch screen. However, it is a very useful feature that will make extensive widget users rather happy.

DROID X gives customers a 4.3-inch high-resolution screen for viewing the latest movies and video from BLOCKBUSTER On Demand® presented by V CAST Video, the newest addition to the Verizon Wireless V CAST application, which also includes access to favorite TV shows. The DROID X video capabilities let customers capture spontaneous fun, combining a dual-flash, 8-megapixel camera, HD camcorder, as well as DLNA and HDMI connectivity to download, stream and share personal HD content.

DROID X customers will also receive Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 with an over-the-air update in the latter half of the summer. With the update, the Flash Player will allow mobile users to experience hundreds of sites with rich applications and content inside the browser, including games, animations, rich Internet applications (RIAs), data presentations and visualizations, ecommerce, music, video, audio and more.

Pricing and Availability
DROID X by Motorola will be available at Verizon Wireless Website beginning July 15 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Customers will receive the mail-in rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. In addition to subscribing to a Nationwide Talk plan or a Nationwide Talk & Text plan, customers will also need to subscribe to an Email and Web for Smartphone plan. Nationwide Talk plans begin at $39.99 monthly access. Email and Web for Smartphone plans start at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access.

Customers can add the optional 3G Mobile Hotspot service to their DROID X for $20 per month. The 3G Mobile Hotspot allows customers to turn the phone into a wireless modem for up to five compatible Wi-Fi devices. In addition, current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by December 31, 2010, can upgrade to any smartphone, including DROID X, without penalty.
